SULAIMAN’S CHAPATI @ TAMAN TUN SARDON, GELUGOR, PENANG.

49

Sulaiman chapati stall can be found at a secretly place at Gelugor, the Pasar & Balai of Rakyat Gelugor, Penang. Its a bit tricky to find this place if you are unfamiliar with the area. From Jalan Yap Chor Ee, drive to the traffic lightwhere you are about to turn into Taman Tun Sardon, take left turn into the small and narrow road, drive straight until you hit a junction which allows you to turn right, take the right route and drive for approximately 3 minutes, you will find this place on your left.

Sulaiman sells freshly made chapati, Roti Jala (net bread) and some desserts such as Bubur Kacang (Sweet Mung Beans Desserts). I am not going to post/comment on their Roti Jala as I personally feel that they were just okay, as in nothing special enough to shout over but their Chapati is seriously a must-try. You will be amazed by how soft and fluffy their chapati can be and how delicious is their home made curry. It just makes a light and perfect tea-time snack for me. A friendly reminder, do try to come as early as possible just to avoid disappointment, especially if you wish to savor their curry chicken as they will be selling like hot cakes.

Its highly recommended for you to eat at the food court right beside the stall as the chapati is best when served hot. Soft and fluffy, and the aroma of the chapati is simply irresistible. Each piece of this chapati is priced at Rm 0.80.

Here be four types of curry in total which you can choose from, namely the Beef curry, Vegetables Curry, Chicken Curry andSardine Paste. The pictures shown were about their Sardine Paste, the sardine paste brings a bit of sweetness with a hint of spiciness. The level of spiciness was alright for me, although it will be slightly spicier than most of the curries but nevertheless, it’s always good to have a sweet sardine paste aside from those ordinary curry. Sardine paste is one of my most recommended curries/sauces available.

Beef Curry (Rm 1.60). The thick and rich curry was very flavorful, together with some chopped beef, as well as some potatoes. The combination with the chapati was just perfect, soft on the outside, chewy bites inside, great flavor, great texture. Beef lovers should try this out.

One of the most demanding curry types will be none other than their Chicken Curry (Rm 3). As you can see, the chicken curry is very thick and creamy, unlike those watery and bland curry, this was actually very flavorful and complemented the Chapati/Roti Jala perfectly. This chicken curry is definitely one of the best chicken curry I have ever had. It comes a big size of chicken and a piece of potato too. Highly recommended.

NASI 7 BENUA, KOO BOO KAFE @ SUNGAI ARA, PENANG

47

People are always attracted to colorful stuff and colors are definitely a very good way to market a product. Koo Boo Kafemarketed their Nasi Kandar well by introducing “Nasi 7 Benua”, which literally representing the 7 continents of the world. Natural coloring and flavors are used, expect to see White Rice/ Nasi Putih, Fragrant Rice/ Nasi Lemak, Tomato Rice/ NasiTomato, Herbed Rice/ Nasi Lemuni, Peanut Rice/ Nasi Kacang, Buttered Rice/ Nasi Minyak and Spicy Buttered Rice/ Nasi HujanPanas. The place was thronged by a massive crowd some time back but there was not a need to queue on my visit. The place has since refurbished and it is now a clean and comfortable place to dine in.

48

Diners can have the regular White Rice or any of the 7 types of Rice but Koo Boo Kafe’s signature will be their Nasi 7 Benua; which consists of 7 types of Rice in different colors and flavors. I had mine for Rm 10- Curry Chicken, Pickled Cucumber, Stir Fry Cabbage with Turmeric, Beef Rendang and Tau Kwa. It may be visually-appealing but the Rice barely registered any flavors… or too mild to be discerned. The Curries, on the other hand, were delicious. Despite slightly over-cooked, the Beef Rendang was robust with flavors, same goes to the Chicken; fully coated in thick, rich and creamy Curry, perfectly spooned over the Rice. A decent place to satiate your Nasi Kandar crave.

LAKSALICIOUS @ HUTTON LANE, GEORGETOWN, PENANG.

45

Talk about Assam Laksa and Penangites will be fired up; every Penangite has his/her very own favorite stall. The most commonanswers to their favorite stalls will be Air Hitam Assam Laksa, Balik Pulau Assam Laksa, PCGS Assam Laksa etc. A Laksa specialist- Laksalicious, strives to serve one of the best Assam Laksas in Penang… with their very own unique touch has opened its doors to the public lately. The place has a cozy setting, portraying as an upscale place that serves Assam Laksa; might chase away those with budget constraints but rest-assured, prices are very reasonable in the context of Penang. The menu is somewhat insubstantial but the management is rolling out new items real soon. Laksalicious can be found at Hutton Lane, a stone’s throw distance away Sunflower Cake House and Hutton Mansion Wine Haus.

Penangites might scoff at the idea of eating the state’s signature dish in an air-conditioned cafe-like space, but let’s not discount the new laksa specialist, Laksalicious, based on its environment.

Sure, there are better Assam laksas around, but Laksalicious’s version is decent. The characteristic sour, tangy, spicy flavours are there (enhance them by adding in prawn paste or hae go); it is topped with lots of onions, mint leaves and lettuce, as it should; and the soup is suitably thickened with fish. The addition of prawn cracker should work perfectly in theory, but it just has this residual taste of oil that’s not very pleasant.

There are only two types of laksa for now – assam and Nyonya (weekends only) – and you choose whether you want the thin or thick noodles. On the menu, you’ll also find local kuih, tong shui (sweet soup) dessert, and the popular cempedak spring roll (if the fruit’s in season).

46

Laksalicious’ signature Assam Laksa (Rm 6.50/ promotional price) will thrill those with stubborn local palate. It comes with a piece of Prawn Cracker, generous amount of julienned Lettuce, Mint Leaves, Onions, Pineapples and Cucumbers… not forgetting the quintessential Torch Ginger. The broth has a balanced medley of sour, spicy, savory notes; add in squiggles of Shrimp Paste for the extra hint of seafood sweetness. No lackluster in their noodles, Laksalicious’ were cooked till perfection- slightly bouncy and not slouchy at all. Dangerously delicious… I actually feel an overwhelming urge to indulge again.

If the weather gets too hot outside and you’re hankering for laksa, or for tourists who want a slightly more gentrified setting to try out local street food without sacrificing too much authenticity, Laksaliciuos is a viable option.

MAGNUM CAFE, MID VALLEY MEGAMALL

42

Magnum Café in Mid Valley Located at the newly revamped 3rd Floor, South Court of Mid Valley Megamall (GSC side), Magnum Cafe opens up the chance to dessert lovers to savour more-than-just-Magnum-ice cream creations. Its location is no doubt another winning point, provides easy access to both locals and tourists who visit Mid Valley through KTM public transportation.

This concept got me pretty excited as well, you basically make your way to the counter and select three toppings of your choice. After that, you’re given a shaker to mix your toppings up and the staff will place them on top of your fresh Magnum ice cream before drizzling more chocolate on top of your creation. You can choose between white, milk or dark chocolate to drizzle onto your “Make My Magnum”

They not only serve ice-cream but as a Cafe, they serve some food like spaghetti and some of the Magnum specialties. I am really happy because can try their Magnum Ice-cream and be the last lucky customer on that day. Since we are here, we just have a try of their ice-cream. I wish to try their other dishes serve at Magnum Cafe.  Apart from that, the menu showcases wide array of selections, combining brownies, waffles, melted chocolate fondue, fruits, cakes and more to make your Magnum ice cream lovely, lively, and “instagram-friendly”. Drop by for some gimmick fun after a long shopping say at the mall, you might enjoy it.

TWENTY & CO

39

Twenty & Co. is a restaurant and coffee house located on a busy corner site in Plaza Azalea, Shah Alam. With glazed frontage on a new building, overlooking the market and a bustling Shah Alam intersection.

When I first glanced at the menu, I was undecided because there was so many choices and food that I wanted to try, but I could only eat as much as my stomach could take, which was one main course and a drink. So, I ordered Arroz Fritoz that is Malaysian most popular fried rice served with 20’s special fried chicken. This is served with crackers, sunny side up and Sambal Belacan. When my food arrived, the presentation wasn’t as great but when I first tasted it, it was heavenly. It tasted really good like Nasi Goreng Kampung.

For the drink, I have ordered Caremal Machiato. I am a coffee lover.. for the coffee, they tase is very pure and stong coffee, I’m really like it, and it is so creamy. And sweet caramel make me enjoy the drink.

Finally, about this restaurant, he staff were very friendly and were good at recommending. I really liked one particular lady because she was so filled with enthusiasm and energy. Overall, I think this restaurant is a very good restaurant to go to. Their food is good, service is good, sounds like a good restaurant to me!

THE TABLE PENANG, LEBUH CARNARVON

34

The Table Penang cafe is a small cafe just before the junction at Lebuh Carnarvon, Georgetown, Penang. The cafe is cool and the owner and staff was very warm and helpful. They just launch by December 2014. It’s a new cafe but starting to pull local and tourist crowd or any passers by. Beside their good coffee, they also have this colorful burgers for the adventurous spirits.

This is one of halal cafe in town, actually i rarely seen halal cafe in Georgetown. Menu varies from western and desserts. Good choice of menu. They also sell homemade cookies in a jar. The cafe decor is nice, furniture’s are made by the owner himself.

I have ordered Chicken Grill serve with fries , vegetables and black pepper sauce. The decoration is perfect and very nice and I ordered Daddyblackie, this is set black burger that served with 100% Australia minced beef, melted cheese, French frise and fresh salad and tomato. The taste is very good and of course I will come and order it again.

For the drink, I have ordered Mocha blended and Coffe Latte. For the Mocha, they served in a jar and served with whipped cream and some coco powder. And for the coffee latte, the served with art on the top of coffee. The design will make me smile and don’t want to stir the coffee. The taste of course delicious. Not to sweet and creamy. I’m really love it.

. I am sure I will come again to this restaurant. The price is reasonable, nice interior design.

SERAI RESTAURANT, PARADIGM MALL

31

For those unfamiliar with Paradigm Mall, there’s a high chance that you might get lost looking for the place. Oddly, this restaurant is not connected to the main mall, but rather accessible via an escalator at Oasis Boulevard, next to Uncle K and where Bulgogi Brothers, TGIF and The loaf is located.

Serai  is known for its classic Malaysian menu from Nasi Kerabu and Rendang Tok to Mee Goreng Mamak and Sang Har Yin Yong. Fret not if you’re in the mood for something apart from the typical Malaysian delights, there’s also a wide range of Western mains, pastas and English desserts to tickle your tastebuds. The menu is typically half Asian and half Western

The waiters as they offer us a super good services. They always smile and give their good attitude. I have order Nasi Ambeng that served with perfect condiment like in this picture. The taste of Nasi Ambeng is very nice and delicious. They served with banana leaves. Besides, I also order Kampung Fried Rice, that served with chicken satay with peanut sauces, and Keropok. I request spicy, and the taste is super delicious.

The prices aren’t the cheapest, but our meals were substantial. I think most diners don’t mind paying a bit more for the comfort of a cozy environment nonetheless. I’d like to return on another weekend for a leisure dinner.

TOYS CAFÉ, PENANG

28

Toys lovers or collectors would definitely love to have this place in mind- stepping into the cafe is like stepping into a toy museum. Toys Cafe is a newly opened humble little cafe located at the bustling road of Bishop Street, the cafe owner himself is an ardent fan of toy figures and has many collection over the years; all the displaying toys are part of his collection. Toys Cafe does not have much to offer currently, just a few simple types of Cakes and few choices of their fresh brews. Nevertheless, the air-conditioned and wifi-available cafe is ideal to spend some time chilling out with friends or to have a closer look at the collection of toys.

First off, I need to compliment the owner and the waiters as they offer us a super good services. If you are that kind of person who always hesitates what to order, this cafe is definitely your next station to sit down and gather with your friends or love ones. The owner made recommendations to us with his kind attitude. A good point.

29

Hot Chocolate, for a typical girl like me, these hot chocolate arts are literally what make my day. The coffee served with a piece of cookies. The taste of chocolate is very pure. Every order of drink, they will draw cartoon on the top of drinks, and draw on the plate before they served. By the way, they can attract many people to try at their café.

30

Pandan Layer Cake, many people claimed that this is the yummiest cake of this shop. It ignited the curiosity of my heart and I ended up order this normal-look dessert.  You can see 3 different layers combined together. The top layer is agar-agar with great gelatinous texture. Another layer which is light in green colour akin to agar-agar but it’s softer than the top layer. The chiffon cake is fluffy and moisture and not airy. Overall, I think this is better than what we buy from pasar malam and it’s in moderate sweetness. Great yet not so surprisingly heaven-like.

VANILLA THE MILLE CREPE CAFÉ

26

Mille Crêpe is a type of very thin pancake that originated from France. Vanilla Cakes offers more than 30 flavors of it. Vanilla Cake’s Mille Crepes are made of more than 20 layers of paper thin crepe with a variety of exciting and tasty fillings carefully spread out between each layer giving it a distinctive texture and flavor , something you will never find in other cakes.

27

Being one of the most popular Mille Crepe sold in Vanilla Cakes, I have to get a whole slice of this. Contrary to its name, this did not taste like charcoal at all. I can’t really describe how this taste because it just tasted like vanilla crepe except that was black in color. However odd that may sound.  Somehow I think this combination works because the charcoal crepe layers somehow neutralizes the sweetness of the cream. Hence, it wasn’t that sweet after all. Slightly on the creamier side, the tiramisu was light and flavorful. Though I must say, there weren’t much coffee flavor to it.

I found Vanilla Cake’s mille crepe to the creamiest. I would presume its because the layers of fresh cream is slightly thicker for the former. In other words, I were to take a bite, the drier version would be more fluffy but the creamy version would be more compressed.

MOHD RAFEE NASI KANDAR

23

Mohd Raffe Restaurant began business since 1959 in Batu Gantong, the racecourse in Penang and subsequently moved to Pulau Tikus in 1998. This 24 hours shoplot outlet is small and is only ventilated by fans. The ambiance is typical of a mamak shop; casual dining atmosphere, bustling with diners and workers and alive with chatter.

In the evenings, tables are set up on the shoplot’s walkway and on the street just in front of it to accommodate more customers and also for the open air dining atmosphere. I have eaten at many nasi kandar outlets, but Raffe is to me, the best of them all. Many Penangite or even first time visitors would agree that Raffe’s curries are distinctively different and their chicken curry is out of this world.

Pots of chicken curries are bubbling and all emanating the most delicious smells. I just take curry chicken with mix curry on the rice. There are many good, decent, subpar outlets in Penang but my recommendation would always be to go to Raffe’s.

PUNCAK MUTIARA CAFE

18

Puncak Mutiaa Restaurant is located at Lot 179, MK 3, Kampung Pelet,, Kampung Pelet, Kubang Semang, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia. First impression is “wow”, how can this big restaurant hide so far inside a small village? This restaurant is located deep inside the estate and they owned various farm inside the restaurant for livestock supply. You may also visit the farm in day time. Once walk into the restaurant, you will see a banglo at the uphill of the restaurant, which they have a swimming pool beside the banglo. you may enjoy romantic pool side candle light dinner as they set up a few set of tables at the pool side.

The concept of this restaurant Puncak Mutiara is Agro Restaurant (eat in the farm). In the restaurant area there is not only dining lodges, but there are also farms where visitors can see goats, cows, chickens, ducks, rabbits and fruit orchards that are a major source of raw materials for the food in this restaurant.

I went there with recommendation from friend that they do very well in lamb. Ordered the signature dish, the lamb beriani rice. It is really really good and I would highly recommend to any lamb lover. As we went during a quite weekday lunch, there are not many other customers and so food was served pretty fast. Besides, they have many types of menu, the menu of lamb, beef, rabbit, chicken, ducks, ostrich, fish and so on. But the specialty of this restaurant is more to lamb. Many types of menu based on lamb that they have. In addition, their “Cendawan Mutiara” is their specialty as snacks. It is very delicious.

CAKE JALAN TIUNG

14

Craving for cakes that has flavorsome taste, fluffy texture and delightful appearance as well as having a good cup of coffee simultaneously? I recently spotted a bakery shop which nestled in the heart of Shah Alam territory. Never knew that people began to invest in this sort of business in such area as the interest of public towards cakes, coffee and tea begun to rise.

Cake Jalan Tiung located at the far end corner, first floor above Ani Sup Utara(restaurant) which can be easily reveal from this angle as their signboard is just here.

15

Cakes were freshly baked few hours prior to actual business hour. Cakes are then placed on top of the cake stands so that the customer can decide on what they want. If cakes aren’t your favorite, don’t worry because there’s cookies as well 🙂

Bare in mind that the head baker will rotate the cake of their choice, so to avoid any disappointment, please visit their Facebook page for more info before paying them a visit.

Meet Salted Caramel & Chocolate. This cake often bakes by the shop so I’m sure the bakers are very confident in baking this with their eyes close. The buttercream frosting not too overpower to compliment the chocolate sponge cake. The salted caramel has a strong aroma as well as sweetness to complete as a whole. Lovely.

Their signature dessert, Tiung Choc Mess. Basically it is a medley of deconstructed choc cake, choc pavlova, some nuts, slices of strawberry, whipped cream & cookies. Then pour milk over them. It was heavenly. The choc meringue was crispy & the choc cake was moist & absorb the milk nicely. Definitely a must try.

I like the idea of every week different cake approach. This just gave customer strong reason for a revisit. They close on Monday and Tuesday for baking. Reopen on Wednesday till Sunday.
